Whether your asphalt needs repairing, resurfacing or maintaining, we’ll get the job done right the first time.

In Australia, when we talk about bitumen and asphalt, we tend to use the words interchangeably. Typically, we think of our road surfaces as being ‘bitumen’. But in fact, bitumen is used to make asphalt – the substance commonly used in the construction of road surfaces.

Bitumen is a black viscous mixture of hydrocarbons, obtained naturally or as the residue from the refinement of crude oil. Once melted down into a sticky substance, it can be combined and mixed with crushed rock to make asphalt. This is the asphalt we then use for car parks, driveways, roads and much more!

While we’re talking about the terms of our trade, once the asphalt is laid, it’s referred to as a ‘pavement’.

Why maintain your asphalt pavement?

Over time, asphalt deteriorates due to a number of factors, such as:

  • Age
  • Traffic: Depending on the usage of your pavement your asphalt may deteriorate quicker.
  • Weather: If your pavement is subject to heavy rain, intense heat and other variable weather conditions, this may contribute to the aging of your pavement.
  • Tree roots: Nearby trees may extend their roots under your pavement, raising the asphalt surface and eventually leading to cracking.
  • Oil spills: Oil residue can leave spots and marks on your otherwise unstained asphalt surface.
  • Heavy objects: Perhaps obvious, but heavy machinery and objects left in the same place will have an effect on your pavement over time.

Asphalt maintenance can also be required following the installation of plumbing pipes or electrical conduits. As a registered building company, we are more than comfortable with this type of work and can communicate with your plumber or electrician prior to works being commenced.

Maintenance of driveways and car parks

It’s important to act quickly to repair your driveway or car park, otherwise the problem can get bigger and more expensive to fix. It also gives a poor impression of your home or business, and can be hazardous.

Potholes are a consequence of failing to repair cracks in the asphalt surface – they occur when water gets through the cracks and expands in the sub-base below the surface, pushing the asphalt pavement upwards. With traffic, the pavement will then break down and collapse into the void, becoming a pothole.
